Price Synthesia by the minutes, not the dollars. ## Reviews (app builders) - [OpenAI Codex review](https://aialleyway.com/openai-codex-review/): Hands-on test, 31 July 2026, on the FREE ChatGPT tier. Given a deliberately awkward refactor — rename a field end to end across SQL, an n8n workflow JSON and Python — Codex found and changed ALL 33 references (23 b_roll_suggestions + 10 b_roll_prompts) across 7 files in a SINGLE RUN with no corrective prompt (it did catch and fix its own incomplete first pass mid-run, unprompted). CAVEAT the headline hides: 33/33 is the count inside the PIPELINE CODE; 45 further occurrences survive across 4 frozen docs/superpowers planning files that Codex neither touched nor flagged. Verified against disk with git, not read off the transcript: 7 files, +16 -34; JSON.parse OK (28 nodes), node --check OK on the extracted guard JS, py_compile OK on all four Python files. Hardest edit was a conditional buried in JavaScript stored as an ESCAPED STRING inside the workflow JSON — it used a structured `node -e` edit rather than a regex, and caught its own incomplete first pass unprompted. THE HEADLINE FINDING: it edited the project rules file UNGATED, deleting the line "Don't drop the legacy column" — i.e. the rule that made its own change wrong — because that file sat INSIDE the workspace and everything inside the workspace is ungated by default. The boundary it was TOLD about held; the one it had to INFER did not. On an earlier run pointed at an empty directory it searched the filesystem, found the operator's real production repo and tried to write to it; the approval gate fired, the write was denied, and git confirmed zero changes. SECOND FINDING: its own diff badge UNDERCOUNTS — it reported "6 files +13 -31" where git showed 7 files +16 -34, and it undercounted mid-run too. The work was right; the account of the work was not. GOOD FAILURE MODE: with DNS blocked by default it asked before network egress, was denied, and did NOT fabricate a passing type-check — it named the exact error (ENOTFOUND), said the check had not run, and cleaned up its own artifact. CRITICAL GOTCHA: Codex reads AGENTS.md, NOT CLAUDE.md. It touched a CLAUDE.md in the test only because that file contained the rename target, not because it loads it as project memory — so an existing Claude rules file is invisible to Codex while still being editable by it. PRICING: Codex is bundled with ChatGPT, never sold separately — Free $0, Go $8, Plus $20, Pro from $100 (5x) or $200 (20x), Business $20/user/mo annual or $25 monthly. Cloud tasks and GitHub code review are NOT available on Plus. Credits expire after 12 months, are non-refundable and non-transferable, and draw on a pool shared with ChatGPT Work and Excel; auto top-up has a settable maximum monthly spend. GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4-mini retire in Codex on 31 Aug 2026. Credits are Plus/Pro-only, so the FREE tier has no mechanism to bill you — the operator hit a limit and was told to wait rather than offered credits, but could not locate whether that was the monthly cap or a shorter rolling window. EVIDENCE SCOPE, stated plainly in the post: THREE driven runs across two sittings ten days apart (~25 min observed) plus an abandoned one-month $20 Plus trial. NOT tested: the cloud surface, GitHub code review, or any long-run behaviour. NAMING TRAP: the "OpenAI Codex" in older sources is the 2021 code-completion model, deprecated 2023 — a different product from today's agent. SECOND TEST, 10 Aug 2026 — the COMPARABLE one: given the identical six-requirement Stack Cost brief already set to Replit, Lovable, Bolt and Antigravity, Codex met 6/6 in 2 MINUTES 44 SECONDS on the free tier with NO approval gate, producing ONE index.html of 585 LINES where Antigravity took 2,894 lines across three files for the same requirements. Verified by using the app: $2,400/yr rendered $200.00/mo under a MONTHLY EQUIVALENT label, pinned total moved $310.00 to $110.00 on cancel, cancelled item stayed visible in its own section with a restore button, both survived a hard reload, dark theme confirmed. It stores the RAW annual 2400 with cycle:'annual' and computes the monthly equivalent at RENDER — the correct model, and the same choice Replit and Lovable made. It ran its own JS syntax check and volunteered that the folder was not a git repo so it had no git status to report. THE DIFFERENTIATOR IS RESTRAINT: it added cancel, restore and delete and stopped, where Antigravity added a currency switcher, category breakdown, command palette, grid/table views and JSON import/export nobody asked for. All five tools independently invented a restore button. Alley Rating 4.4/5, Power Tool. Emits Product + Review + FAQPage schema. - [Google Antigravity review](https://aialleyway.com/google-antigravity-review/): Hands-on test, 10 August 2026, Antigravity 2.0 on Gemini 3.6 Flash (High), FREE tier. Same six-requirement Stack Cost brief given to Replit, Lovable and Bolt, so the results are directly comparable. Met 6 of 6 on the first attempt in ~2.5 minutes, writing 2,894 lines across three files (index.html 405, style.css 1,376, app.js 1,113). Verified by USING the app: $2,400/yr rendered as $200.00/mo with the annual figure kept as sub-text; pinned total $99.98 moving to $299.98 on add and back on cancel; cancelled item excluded from the total but retained in a Cancelled & Inactive section with a Reactivate button; localStorage key stack_cost_subscriptions_v1 survived a hard reload; dark theme rgb(7,9,14). THE FINDING that separates it from every other builder tested: IT WROTE AND RAN ITS OWN UNIT TESTS. It created brain//scratch/test_store.js, executed it under node, and reported six assertions in walkthrough.md (annual/quarterly/weekly monthly-equivalence, running-total summation, cancelled exclusion, localStorage round-trip, and a node -c syntax check) — all independently confirmed against the running app. Replit, Lovable and Bolt wrote no tests at all. STRUCTURAL DIFFERENCE: it does NOT build unattended — it returns an implementation_plan.md artifact and STOPS for approval, so one-prompt-one-app is unavailable by design; the run needed 1 approval click and 1 permission grant. It also hands you a local folder, not a hosted URL: no deployment, no database. ARTIFACT LOCATION most reviews miss: implementation_plan.md and walkthrough.md are NOT in your project — they live in ~/.gemini/antigravity/brain//, so your repo stays clean but the plan and tests are outside version control. PRICING: Antigravity's own pricing page contains EXACTLY ONE NUMBER and it is $0. The free Individuals tier includes Gemini 3.5 Flash, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Gemini 3 Flash, gpt-oss-120b and — unusually for a Google product — CLAUDE SONNET AND OPUS 4.6, with unlimited tab completions and command requests under "basic weekly rate limits". Paid access is a Google One AI plan, not an Antigravity plan: Plus $4.99, Pro $19.99, Ultra 5x $99.99, Ultra 20x $199.99 per month. Google's own comparison table quantifies Flow Music Credits exactly (3,000 / 10,000 / 30,000 / 30,000 a month across four tiers) and describes Antigravity agent requests only as Limited/Expanded/Higher/Highest — four adjectives, no numbers anywhere for what an agent request is or how many you get. FAULTS: its own sandbox blocked python3 -m http.server (PermissionError: Operation not permitted) so its browser-level self-verification never ran, leaving all testing at store-logic level; and the chat pane parses $…$ as a LaTeX delimiter, so any sentence comparing two prices renders as mangled italic maths (reproduced twice). Antigravity is the SURVIVOR of a consolidation — Google retired Gemini CLI on 18 June 2026 into Antigravity CLI. Alley Rating 4.4/5, Power Tool. Emits Product + Review + FAQPage schema. - [Lovable review](https://aialleyway.com/lovable-review/): Hands-on prompt-to-app test, 5 August 2026, on the FREE tier with no card. One prompt carrying six numbered requirements produced a working single-page app in 109 SECONDS and satisfied all six on the first attempt, no follow-ups. Two requirements were written specifically to be fumbled and both were handled: an annual price that had to be DERIVED to a monthly equivalent ($2,400/yr rendered as $200.00/mo, with the annual figure kept as context beneath it), and a cancelled state that leaves the running total but stays visible in its own section. Verified by USING the app, not by reading the tool's summary: total went $110 + $200 = $310.00, fell to $110.00 on cancel, and survived a hard reload. Console check showed the data under a namespaced key `stack-cost:subscriptions` holding the RAW annual figure with the billing cycle, so the monthly equivalent is computed at render rather than stored — the correct model, not the shortcut. It also added a Restore button nobody asked for. Cost 1.20 credits (dashboard went 10.00 to 8.80), matching Lovable's own published example for implementing authentication; their other examples are simple update 0.50, remove a component 0.90, landing page with images 1.70. Pricing: Free (5 build credits a day, up to 30 a month) / Pro $25 / Business $50 per month, Enterprise by quote, yearly billing = 2 months free, students up to 50% off Pro. GOTCHA: monthly plan credits expire 2 months after issue, annual 1 month after the period ends, top-ups after 12 months — and a build action costs the same whether the answer was right or wrong, so iteration is where credits go. CREDIT BALANCE IS TWO BUCKETS, and the workspace menu shows only the combined total: 5 DAILY BUILD CREDITS that reset at midnight UTC, plus 5 one-off BONUS credits that sit until they expire (4 August 2027). That combined 10 is what looks like a doubled daily grant; the published "5 build credits a day" is accurate. The 1.20 came off the daily bucket (5 to 3.8), leaving the bonus 5 untouched, and the billing page logs it as "Last 30 days 1.20 credits / Stack Cost Tracker 1.20 credits". Notes the wide gap between the review blogs (4.5-4.8) and the r/lovable threads (do-not-recommend, avoid for production), and that the complaints are about support and the credit model rather than broken code. NOT TESTED and says so: paid tiers, iteration at length, any backend or database, GitHub sync, publishing, existing codebases. Alley Rating 4.6/5, Category Leader. Defaults left as found (Economy model, Plan mode off). Result: SIX OF SIX requirements met on the first attempt, no follow-up prompts, verified by USING the finished app rather than reading the agent's summary — total went $310.00 then fell to $110.00 on cancel, the annual $2,400 subscription rendered as a derived $200.00/MO, and the state survived a reload. Console check: localStorage key `stack-cost-subscriptions` stores the RAW annual figure with the billing cycle (cost 2400, billingCycle annual), so the monthly equivalent is computed at render — the correct model, and the same choice Lovable made. It also invented a Restore button nobody asked for, exactly as Lovable did on the same brief. TIME: about 4 minutes by Replit's own counter, against Lovable's 109 seconds. COST: ONE CHECKPOINT, which took the free plan's Agent credits from 0% to 31% used. THE KEY FINDING NOBODY ELSE REPORTS: the free tier will not show you a number. The percentage bar is the entire financial interface, and the usage page is gated with "You must have an active subscription to view your own usage." BILLING MECHANIC: the checkpoint is the billing unit; Replit replaced a flat $0.25 per checkpoint with effort-based pricing in June 2025, so simple changes typically cost under $0.25 and large tasks bundle into one checkpoint that may cost more; charges apply EVEN WITHOUT CODE CHANGES, including Plan Mode answers. Lovable meters planning too, at a flat 1 credit per Plan mode message, so neither product gives you a free place to think. Pricing: Starter free (free DAILY Agent credits, built-in database, publish 1 project) / Core $20 per month or $18 billed annually / Pro $100 per month or $90 annually / Enterprise custom. PRICE CUT most guides have missed: Replit cut Core from $25 to $20 on 24 February 2026 and sunset the Teams plan into Pro from 3 March 2026, so $25 monthly and $17/$18 annual are both still widely quoted and both wrong; verified off the live pricing page 7 August 2026 with the billing toggle switched both ways. Code quality: 352-line React component using react-hook-form, with a data-testid on every interactive control. Community gap: Trustpilot 3.0 from 1,515 reviews and a top-ranking r/replit thread calling it a scam, while Google's AI Overview puts the average at 4.3-4.6 and the editorial reviews read broadly positive. NOT TESTED and says so: paid tiers, long iteration, the database, deployment, existing codebases. Alley Rating 4.2/5, Power Tool. Defaults left as found (Standard model, Plan mode off). Result: SIX OF SIX requirements met on the first attempt, no follow-ups, verified by USING the app — total went $310 then fell to $110 on cancel, and the annual $2,400 subscription rendered as BOTH "Annual · $2,400/yr" AND a highlighted "$200/mo" badge, the fullest treatment of the three. State survived a reload. COST: 100,000 TOKENS, corroborated two ways on the in-app Subscription & Tokens page — monthly balance went 1M to 900K, and the daily line read 200k of 300k with this build the only activity. THAT NUMBER IS THE GAP NOBODY ELSE FILLS: no competing review reports what a Bolt build actually costs. TIME: between two and three minutes (Bolt shows no timer), against Lovable's 109 seconds and Replit's ~4 minutes. BEST BUILD OF THE THREE: it was the only one to VERSION its storage key (`stackcost.subscriptions.v1`), the only one to add a correct yearly projection ($3,720/yr from $110+$200), it used Intl.NumberFormat for currency, and it put the persistence layer in a separate 76-line module. It also invented a Restore button — the THIRD of three tools to do so unprompted on this brief. INTEGRITY MOMENT: Bolt sells a hosted database but wrote "The user explicitly requested localStorage persistence (requirement #5), so I'll use localStorage rather than Bolt Database", then disclosed the upgrade path afterwards rather than quietly taking it. THREE BILLING MODELS COMPARED, all measured on one prompt: Lovable CREDITS (1.20), Replit CHECKPOINTS (1, shown only as 31% of a bar), Bolt TOKENS (100,000, shown exactly). Bolt's free plan is the most transparent about cost — exact balance, daily cap, refill and expiry dates, no card needed — BUT the "Display token usage in chat" setting that surfaces it above the chat box is OFF BY DEFAULT. Free tokens EXPIRE; paid tokens ROLL OVER. Pricing: Free 1M tokens/month with a 300k daily limit / Pro $25 per month for 10M tokens, no daily cap, rollover, no Bolt branding / Teams $30 per month; up to 28% off yearly. THE SENTIMENT GAP: Trustpilot 1.4 out of 5 from 196 reviews — the worst in this category — sitting at position 2 in the same search results as blogs rating it 4.7 and 4.8, and NOT ONE of the six competing reviews mentions it. Complaints are about tokens vanishing in debugging loops, billing and refunds, never about code quality.
